Is God better than sex?

If you had a choice between one day with Jesus and one day with the man or woman of your sexual dreams, whom would you choose?


Of course, the logical, theological answer would and should be Jesus.  But is that how you really feel? 


It's easy to see the beauty and attraction of a gorgeous woman or handsome man.  The desire he or she arouses is tangible.  But what about God?  Even He said it wasn't good for the first man to be alone. Is there a pleasure men and women bring each other that even God can't bring?


It is written,
"In Your Presence, there is fullness of joy.  At Your right hand are pleasures evermore."


Complete Joy.
Eternal Pleasure.


Can any man or woman make and keep that promise?
That's what the adulterer and the adulteress suggest. 
The adulteress says, "In MY body there is fullness of joy, under the authority of my sexuality there are pleasures ever more."
But can she make good on her promise?


It is also written,
"Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart."


But will He?  And when He does, will it be better than sex?


Ask the Seraphim, the fiery angels before God's throne in the book of Revelation.


They never stop bowing, worshipping, and praising God, crying "Holy, Holy, Holy, LORD God Almighty, who was and is and is to come. The whole earth is filled with Your Glory."


From the beginning of time, the Seraphim have been ceaselessly worshipping God.


Think of the most sexually attractive man or woman you can imagine.  Do you believe he or she would be so arousing that you would bow down and ceaselessly worship him or her?  All the Seraphim are doing is SEEING God.  Just the sight of Him inspires constant worship.  We aren't talking about actual contact with God. They aren't touching Him.  They are simply seeing Him as He is.  They never stop worshipping.


No man or woman, no matter how arousing, inspires this kind of worship.


God is infinitely better than sex.

When You See a Believer Worship

The Lord said to Moses,  “Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings the Israelites consecrate to me, so they will not profane my holy name. I am the Lord."  Lev.22:1-2


Imagine the moment a groom and bride look into each other's eyes.  Their vows are about to pour from their hearts, when suddenly, obnoxious laughter fills the back of the sanctuary.  Angry, the minister looks to the back and commands the giggling 15 year old girls to leave the sanctuary.


The girls leave, but the sacred offering of dedicated hearts have been dishonored. God and all present are displeased.


When you see a believer worship, know that you are watching what God considers a "sacred offering."  A son of God is giving his body to His Creator.  A daughter of God is presenting her body to her Lord.  God receives these offerings of their bodies with great love and reverence.  When you see a believer worship, so should you. 


And when you bow your head before God, you need no approval from me or anybody.  Your body is a living sacrifice offered to God, consecrated to Your Maker.  When a believer sees you worshiping, he should respect your offering to God; she should do everything in her power to leave you to Christ.


Sharing this offering together should create no self-consciousness, as if we judge each other's offerings of our bodies.  We seek to please God alone. 


When we see a believer worship, we should honor their offering to God.

How to Be a Worship Leader

As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come and stand at the entrance, while the LORD spoke with Moses.  Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance of his tent.  Exodus 33:10-11

Have you ever been coerced into worshiping God?  You know what I mean.  Some praise and worship leader tries to cheer lead you into God's presence.  You are commanded to shout, raise your hands, clap your hands, praise God, thank God, jump for joy...on and on and on.  You are ordered to "usher in the presence of God," or make a "joyful noise unto the LORD." You are told that you must "enter in his gates with thanksgiving in your hearts and enter into his courts with praise."  You must give the "sacrifice of praise," because He "inhabits the praises of His people."

All of this may be true, well, and good.  After all, it is in the Bible.

But a true worship leader simply enters into God's presence himself.  She and God connect, the congregation sees God and her connecting, and they join in that connection.

That's real worship.
That's a real worship leader.

It actually does God great dishonor to be a "cheer leader" instead of a worship leader.

Everyone knows when someone is genuinely excited about something or someone, versus when they try to make themselves excited when they are not.  Many worship leaders are trying to act passionate about God. But it's an act.

We've all experienced the real thing though.

I remember at a retreat a young man sang a song to the Lord. It was a quiet song.  And it was beautiful.  But there was something else.  A "holy hush."  A feeling that God Himself liked the song, which made me worship God with the singer.

This was different from another singer, whose voice was also beautiful.  But I didn't feel God listening and enjoying the song, so I couldn't join in God's enjoyment.

If you are a praise and worship leader, or even if you are not, the way to be a worship leader is to simply enter God's presence for yourself, for the enjoyment of God alone.  And when God responds to you, the people who want to worship Him will feel Him with you, and worship Him with you.
