How to Experience Real Authority (Part 1)

I’m a bouncer. I’m given an assignment I can no way enforce. “No one can go upstairs right now.” But people go upstairs anyway. Fellow employees. What can I do to stop them? I can’t fire them. I can tell on them. But what good is that after they’ve gone upstairs? I’m learning the truth about authority: If it can’t be enforced, it’s not real. I’m an officer. I’m giving a command to an inmate, “Go to your cell.” He refuses. I warn. I pepper spray . He is on the ground, and I’m handcuffing him. Back up officers are arriving to take him to solitary confinement. I’m in authority. Badge. Taser. Right. Might. Real authority.
