Why did God give Moses these miraculous options? Didn't God know whether the elders of Israel would believe first, second, or third miracle? Why did God say "If they do not believe you or pay attention to the firs miraculous sing, they may believe the second?" Which by implication God is saying the may not believe the second? They may or may not believe these miracles.
Did God really know which miracle they would believe?
Most of the time when I read commentaries on passages like this, the commentator will go ahead and tell me that "of course God knows what's going to happen. He's omniscient. All knowing. He can't NOT KNOW! He's just going through these motions for Moses sake, just like He did when He asked Adam where He was in the Garden. God only asks questions for our sake."
Well what about this passage,
Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see IF what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. IF not, I will know.” Genesis 18:20-21, all emphasis mine.
Now look at all that I emphasized and underlined in these two verses:
- God is going down TO SEE IF what He's being told about Sodom is really as bad as He's being told. Key word: IF.
- And IF not, because it may be as bad, and it MAY NOT BE AS BAD, GOD WILL KNOW!
Wouldn't God already know how bad things are in Sodom and Gomorrah before anyone cried out to Him about it? Why does He need to go down and see for Himself? Why is it only then that He will know?
Does God really know everything about Sodom and Gomorrah?
Does God really know everything about whether the elders would believe Moses' miracles?
